Here in Ibiza at www.thebodycamp.com we believe in the concept of mindful eating.
We have always been interested in the ways of Thich Nhat Hanh – read his book “How To Eat” – and today will be looking at some of his concepts. Why? Because in todays fast paced world, mindfulness is becoming a very important part of people’s daily lives.
It enables so many amazing things to happen in our life – such as gratitude, enjoyment and reduces the risk of being unhealthy.
Here are 6 ways to mindful eating:
1. Chew your food mindfully
Be present with it. Don’t chew your worries, fears or anger. Don’t chew on planning or chew on anxiety. Think only about the food you are chewing now!
2. Eat a meal in silence
Once a week, do not make conversation at the table. instead only eat, enjoy and saviour the food you are eating….no talking, just mindful eating. The focus will only be on the food!
3. Take your time
Give yourself plenty of time. Don’t rush the meal. Enjoy your food. Be there fully – body and mind, do not be rushed. Take your time when eating.
4. Each spoon or fork contains the universe
Pay attention to each fork or spoonful. When we chew, became aware the whole universe is there in that bite of food – realize how lucky you are to be able to taste the food and how your body is going to use it as good fuel. The earth and the sky have calibrated to bring this spoonful of food to you.
5. Eating the right amount
Mindful eating leads to the correct amount of food consumed – when we chew carefully and eat only healthy nutrition 80% of the time, we won’t bring much sickness or disease into our body or our mind.
6. Eating without feelings
Some people eat more when they are sad or unhappy – this can lead to food becoming a craving rather than nourishment. When we take time to take care of our emotions with mindfulness and compassion, we can eat mindfully. We can enjoy our food without craving and develop a healthy and positive relationship to eating.
